CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“Damn it,” Darla says as she reads her phone. “John just asked me to go to the movies.”

I smile as I wipe down the tables in my section. “I thought it was a casual thing.” I make sure to raise my brows in humor.

“It is. He’s just going to the new Ben Affleck film that I really wanted to check out. Ever since that man got back together with Jennifer Lopez, I’ve been on a serious Affleck kick.” By the blush on her face, I can tell this is more than just wanting to see an Affleck film.

“Get out of here. I’ll finish up for you.”

She rises on her toes. “You mean it?”

“Of course. Go get your Affleck on.”

I smile, and she rushes over to me for a hug. I’m not used to people hugging me, especially in this manner, so I stand there and let her embrace me while I’m still bent over, cleaning the table. After all, I guess it’s kind of sweet of her.

“Thank you so much. I owe you one.”

“Get out of here.” I swat her away with the rag and move on to the next table.

Darla takes her apron off and leaves the restaurant. I finish my section, then move over to Darla’s, cleaning the place so it’s ready for tomorrow’s breakfast rush.

“I’m out of here,” Tim says, standing by the door. “You want me to stay and help you finish up?”

“No, thank you though. I’m good.” I stand up and ask hesitantly, “Is Grant still back there?”

“Yeah. He’s in his office. Everything okay?” he asks cautiously.

I smile in reassurance. “Yeah. I have some things to go over with him about the accounting.”

Tim’s brows rise into his hairline. “He actually gave you his books?”

“That surprises you?” I tilt my head in question.

He grimaces, then holds his hands up. “Not in a bad way. Do you think you can help him?”

“Yeah, actually, I can,” I say, surprised by the pride in my voice.

His brown eyes look down to the floor, and a grin appears as he shakes his head in amazement. “Rock was right.”

“Rock? Oh dear. I don’t know if I want to know what that comment means.”

He laughs. “I knew you showed up here for a reason.”

“Thanks?” I say with a raised brow.

“Have a good night, Sophie. And thank you for helping Grant. He needs it.”

I lock the door from the inside after Tim leaves and head back to the office, where Grant is sitting at his desk.

Trying to ignore the butterflies swarming in my stomach, I knock on the door. “You got a second?”

He lifts those blue-gray eyes, and I don’t get the same look of disdain he gave me the last time I was in this office. It would make sense if he did. I represent the only thing he’s ever hated in this world.

“You’re here late,” he says.

I lift the binder in my hand. “I wanted to talk to you in private and when you weren’t swamped.”

He nods as he sits back in his chair.
